Harrisburg Pilot Lieutenant Belvin W. Maynard & Steelton Navigator/Mechanic William L. Kline won the U.S. Army Air Service Trans-Continental Air Derby in 5 days, defeating 63 other teams in the race.

Steelton’s Dorothy Gillette won the women’s 100 yard swimming event at the annual Harrisburg Kipona. Her sister Constance won 2nd place. Her winning time was 1 minute 21 & 1/5 seconds.

Steelton’s Dick Nebinger led Beaver High (WV) Boys Basketball Team to the S.I.A.A. Championship. (Southern Interscholastic Athletic Assoc.) and led Beaver High to the Sectional Track & Field Champions. He also led them to the Tri-State Track & Field Championship. Nebinger was the Athletic Director and coach at Concord College in Athens, West Virginia. He played Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox (1911).

Steelton’s Louis Brodnick was a member of the United States Army Championship basketball team. The team. defeated opponents from all over Europe during WWII. Their uniforms were made from a German parachute by a tailor on the American team.

Steelton’s Brian Yingling (while playing for the Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen) was the NCAA Division III Ice Hockey Scoring Champion with 2.41 points per game (65 points in 27 games) and NCAA Division III Power Play Goal Scoring Champion with 11 PPG in 27 games. While playing with the Bismarck Bobcats of the Professional Inline Hockey Association He was the winner of the first Joe Cook Award awarded at the conclusion of the 2002 season. He also won the award a record 6 times, becoming the first player to win the award twice with two different teams and was an 8-time All-Star.
